Justin Bergsma - Lead Teacher for Seniors (Ages 9 - 12) & LIT program

This is Justin's 2nd year at Great Moose Adventures! He is in the final year of his Bachelors of Education - with a goal to teach science at the high school level.

He has gained experience working with a wide variety of children through his practicum teaching placements in both elementary and high school classrooms and has enjoyed practicing positive behaviour management techniques focusing on engagement through inquiry based learning and inclusion strategies to be sure that all the children's needs are being met.

Justin has also always loved the outdoors and recognizes the value of making connections with our natural world. He went on his first hiking trip in grade 9 and has never looked back. His most recent trip was in Peru where he hiked 62 km of the Salkantay trail in 5 days.

Justin has also been involved in volunteering to lead hiking trips, which includes assisting with hiking trips in the Adirondacks through his former high school.

Justin is also a very active member of a Kingston-based non-profit organization called Camp Outlook where he leads overnight camping trips for local youth. For this initiative, Justin utilizes a child-focused strategy rooted in humour, adventure and respect to encourage self-esteem development and overall happiness - all the while keeping everyone safe in an outdoor setting.

When Justin is not studying or camping in the great outdoors, he loves sports, board games, card games, and being with friends.

Samantha Stratford - Lead Teacher for Middlers (ages 6 - 9)

This is Sam's 2nd year at Great Moose Adventures.  Samantha is in her final year of the Bachelor of Education program at Lakehead University, working towards being a full time teacher - starting in the fall of this year. Her love for teaching students shows, particularly in the aquatics world!

She has 12 years of competitive swimming background, which took her to the national level, with 10 years of coaching and teaching swimming, she has a great passion for the water. Samantha holds her NLS qualification and is a qualified YMCA swim instructor.

Samantha spent many summers working with kids through camps and swimming, although her most memorable was working at the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. It was there that she provided kids an opportunity to succeed who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to attend a camp program.

She is excited to put together many of the skills that she developed during her teaching placements, swimming and camp to utilize the forest and outdoor setting  to create meaningful lessons & programs at Great Moose Adventures.
